Digital Citizenship for Teenagers

In Information and Software Technology this term we have been involved in the Digiteen project. This involved learning about the nine digital elements. Also in this project we have been learning to use many different websites some of these were the Ning and Wiki. With these websites we were able to communicate with our team members, and talk about what we were going to put onto the Wiki.

The Ning and Wiki were websites that we posted our work that we had researched. The Wiki was the website that we were going to be marked on for the information that we posted on our subtopics and the main topics. Once the information was posted we needed to go through both pages and edit and punctuate the mistakes that were made by the team members that were around the world. The Ning was used to talk to your team mates about what can be done on the subtopic page and also used like a social chat room to talk to people all around the world.

The emails that we received from our teacher help us through the course because we got the websites that we needed to join as a hyperlink which made it a lot easier to sign up to the webpage. Also so you could send drafts of your work to the teacher and get replies to what can you can fix up. The emails we got also told us when we needed to have some assessment emailed to the teacher.

When we had our exam week and camp it was really hard to do any work at all on the wiki because we didn’t have any time at home to do work on the digteen project due to everyone studying really hard, camp was another week that there was no work done because we were out in the bush no computer or internet. If we had any good ideas on what can be put onto the wiki we needed to wait the whole week and by the end we would have forgot the idea we had.

The discussion tab on the wiki worked very well if your team mates were at least once a day going onto the wiki and look what has been done or adding more information. The discussion tab didn’t work when people in your team wasn’t doing any work. The teacher could go onto the discussion tab and look at the history tab and see what each person has done. In my group it worked alright when the people were looking at the wiki.

Feedback from team mates was vital because we needed to know what they are thinking about your idea that you tell them on the discussion tab and what can be added or taken out. When your team mates tell you there ideas you tell them what you think and what can be changed to make it better. To allow this to happen we needed to have the communication with the team members going very well but in some of the teams this let them down from having a very large amount of information on their subtopic wiki, to just a couple of paragraphs.

Some improvements that can be made for next year is that the teachers can get more organized at the start of the course when they tell people which website they need to join and make sure they tell everyone the same thing. Also make sure that the students can get access to the internet. Tell the student how they can get in touch with one another using the various forms, and explaining to the student in depth what is needed to be done and how it can be done.

In conclusion the whole project would have had been a lot more of a success if it was a bit more interesting with some different topics. From this whole experience I have learned about the nine digital elements and have had a very good experience talking and working with people all around the world.
