Digital Citizenship for Teenagers

This term in class we have been exploring the different elements of “ digital citizenship”. When I first started this topic I had no idea what the term digital citizenship meant or how it applied to my everyday life. But as the term progressed and is still progressing my understanding of this topic has expanded through the use of collaborating with kids my age around the world and also the use of Wiki’s.

The world collaboration is a word that before I started this topic really didn’t fully understand. I thought collaboration was asking one of my mates if he thought the font colour is ok. But really effective collaboration takes much more time and effort than simply asking one of your friends. Through the use of a Ning page that all the Kids involved with this project could use, I could contact the people in my group and get there ideas and thoughts of our section of digital Citizenship (rights and responsibilities). If was quite effective but some of the fatal flaws where that my group members weren’t always very constructive therefore the collaboration didn’t always take place.

Another way that I could communicate with my team mates was through the history tabs on the flat classroom wiki. The history tab served as a journal to write down what you changed and added to the page. This way you could see what each team member had done or not done. Then after using the history tab you can them go onto the discussion tab and ask team members about the changes that they have made or even add suggestions for future editing. This was also quite useful but had a similar flaw to the ning in the way that all the members need to add to these tabs in order for collaboration to occur.

One of the major downfalls of the project was that our year 9 class was away for about 2 weeks while this project was taking place. This meant that we had to pack for work in the weeks we were at school. So often the work wasn’t as involved or of a high quality because of the rush to get it done.

What I have taken away from this project is a higher understanding of my “digital Generation”, and what it means to live in a world that is very much based around the internet. I have come to understand that there is a blur between real life and digital life that many people cannot decipher between. But I have also learnt that the internet is one of the greatest resources of our time, and that the world would struggle without it. I have really enjoyed researching this topic and have taken much away from it.

Really creative, and one of the most detailed videos (in a descriptive way). But some moments were REALLY corny.
