During the past term in IST I have expanded my knowledge about the internet and its surrounding’s through many activities such as those that take place on the Digiteen Ning and the digiteen09-2 wiki that our class has been involved in.
I have worked with other students from foreign countries such as China, Japan and Qatar as well as a student from my class to produce information relating to the aspects of digital communication involving teenagers in today’s society.
As a group, The 3 other students from foreign countries and I were to introduce our self over the Ning. The Ning allowed has to have our own customizable page that included the options of writing about ourselves as well as including a few images that are based around what we enjoy as an individual and even the chance to add some photo’s of ourselves so the other member’s in the group could become familiar with who they are working with.
The Wiki (digiteen09-2) was where our group was to discuss and collaborate ideas that were based on our sub-topic. The Wiki featured tools such as the discussion tab and the history tab which were useful in order to see how much each person on the team has contributed to the project as well as discuss what idea’s we would like on the page and provide each other with feedback so we could produce an end product of high quality.
I enjoyed working on the digiteen09-2 flat classroom project as it has allowed me to express my opinion and ideas towards the particular subjects related to digital communication in today’s teenage society. The group project that I was involved in on this Wiki was to do with the topic of ‘communication and entertainment ‘. The 3 other members of the group and I were to publish information to this Wiki that we thought would be adequate to this topic such as what is digital communication and entertainment, when is it used throughout society, what does it involve and what are the positives and consequences ECT. We expressed our views on multiple concepts of this subject such as social networking and digitally involved communication.
It was hard at times, as the students I was working with had difficulty at times since they weren’t fluent English speakers therefore their writing often didn’t make much sense or wasn’t very assertive.
The discussion tab is a great feature on the Wiki the allows all the members of the group communicate in one place so we could work out each other views and opinions that link to our sub-topic, we could also provide each other with essential feedback that would help with improving our groups marks. Although the discussion tab was not used by the other members of the group, I posted 4 forums on my different opinions towards the subject as well as providing feedback to the other students and they had no response.
As I did not receive any feed back or collective criticism from the other members of my group, emailing my drafts to the teacher allowed me to see where I needed to improve. This helped me to have a better chance in producing enhanced quality work.
The Ning included all of the members from all school’s involved in the digiteen09-2 wiki. Apart from having our own page here, we were also able to communicate with the members from all groups, this was helpful as it was much easier to receive and view the comments here that on the wiki. The Ning also allowed me to read other people’s blogs and forums that provided a greater understanding on the digital elements as a whole, I posted a response to one of the forums on what my opinions is towards online and offline harassment.
Another thing that made this project hard was the number of absences that our class was involved in such as school camps for a week and many other sporting commitments that occurred during the term, This lead to loss of communication throughout the project with other team member’s and the quantity and quality of work that was produced in the end product.
I have learnt about Digital citizenship throughout the project. It is when people know and understand how to use the internet properly and safely otherwise there is consequences within the act of abusing the privilege to access what the internet has to offer. It is important that students are educated on digital citizenship as technology is a big factor of today’s world and is becoming more popular and more popular yet dangerous all the time.
I do believe that the project could be enhanced in a several ways to make it more interesting and easier to use. I found there was a lack of communication between teen members which is a major problem when you need advice and provide feedback or collaborating ideas. Students need to become more active and involved in the use of the discussion tab; I believe that the teachers from the other schools involved did not make it clear that the discussion tab must be used in order to communicate with the other members in there group. If the project was made more interesting I do believe students would display a greater involvement towards the project, this may happen by making the project clearer and add additional help tabs for when a student is struggling with what they must do and include.
I consider the Digiteen course as a worthwhile involvement since I have learned a large extent of information about digital elements that apply in today’s teenage society for instance keeping safe online, communication and the difference between online and offline behavior. With a few enhancements to make the project further interesting students, Digiteen will be an excellent way for students to take part in a project that allows them to express their views about the digital world.
