Reflective writing on the Digiteen by Mateya Tomii:
The digiteen project involved and included working on the wiki completing the sub and main topics for your own topic which has been given to you. Also you are in groups with people overseas such as countries like America which you have to work with and communicate etc. Also we started recently the action plan which is completing the questions set out and each group will complete this for their topic they chose and in groups from our class only.
The action plan can be a movie, PowerPoint or an animation on your topic (preferably and now we are only doing a PowerPoint). The action plan has set out tasks and questions to be completed and we are basically doing an overview of the topic e.g. health and wellness over the internet. The action plan is describing the action that were doing which would be the topic by showing evidence etc the impact of it and most of all the reflection of the action. Also we made our digiteen profile which we created being digital citizens and wrote blogs about the school, ourselves and forums on the digiteen.
For the wiki we had to communicate overseas to our group members and complete our topic. We communicated on the digiteen account by sending messages/comments to each other, also leaving links on the sub and main topic for your other group members to find some useful information and also use the discussion tab. The discussion tab is used for offering ideas/suggestions/changes etc and opinions on what you should do and also to communicate with one another of your group members.
The ning is used for blogging, posting comments/messages and forums. The ning is great to communicate as digital citizens between one another whether it’s your friends or people overseas. Also the ning is has a groups which are basically schools from all over the world. The forums are basically about digital citizenship and how it affects and others for example one forum was about e.g. Where do you draw the line between having fun and being inappropriate online? Is it different online than offline? Having these forums on the ning lets us have a better understanding of digitalisation and being a good digital citizen and making us aware of what’s out their online.
There were quite a few absences which disturbed our flow and routine like the year 9 camp which was for a week from 18-22 of May. Also the Nowra and Berry excursion for History and Geography which was on the 1st of June and Step to the future on the 3rd of June. Also the long weekend this had the pupil free day on the 5th of June and the Queen’s Birthday on the 8th of June.
The emails from the students to the teachers was a great success as Mr. Madsen gave everyone suggestions and how to correct your work and assignments to get a better mark. Which you had to submit a draft before the due date and it was optional but for your own benefit.
In the RSS feeds on the wiki they gave a lot of definitions and terms on digiteen elements for example such as Digital access, communication, literacy and etc. Also on the RSS feeds they have a group called the Diigo Group which is in the Digiteen's feed and have many topics and give links for them to help you gather information and facts about your topic for the main and sub topics and even the action plan for an example such as Common Sense Internet Safety Survival Guide.
The collaboration was mainly on the wiki when we had to complete and finish the sub and main topic for our certain topic. By communicating with others on the digiteen and offering ideas this can be used by using the discussion tab. There was great collaboration from using the discussion tab from team members communicating with one another from people overseas. The collaboration was great as team members offered ideas, suggestions, changes and links for more information and facts etc. The collaboration is also needed for the action plan but slightly easier as we are in groups with class members therefore easier to communicate and talk to etc. We also collaborated with our teacher Mr. Madsen as he offered advice and help on our assignments by submitting them early for key suggestions and changes to receive a better mark for your own benefit.
The feedback from students was good they were very keen and exciting on the projects that we have now completed and finished and looking forward to what’s ahead. As a class I thought we did really were collaborating and communicating with other team members from overseas as no one has done this before and a great learning experience and a great skill.
I think overall we did a great job as I just noted in the previous paragraph collaborating and communicating etc. The improvements I would think would be better communication in a way as I thought as a class not many people used the discussion tab and maybe if we had a forum with our school and other schools which we were working with at the time. Also maybe giving use certain links to our topics to gather more information if necessary.
The digiteen citizenship means to me a lot as I am a digital citizen it has taught me a lot that I did not know and most important digital etiquette. How to be a good digiteen citizen and forums have taught us a great deal on this especially when we had to write a blog recently on one for the forums and topic. The digiteen is great as not many people of our age would know about this and it’s great that it is specifically designed for teenagers such as us.
