Digital Citizenship for Teenagers
- What's your opinion on cyber bullying?
- How do you think the victims' loved ones feel?
- Do you think it'll ever stop?
I think cyber bullying is just another form of insecure people trying to take out their negative feelings on others. They don't realize what they're doing when they cyber bully. Cyber bullies hurt normal people and can send them into depression or other forms of illnesses, whether it's physical or mental. Just because it's online doesn't mean that you're hurting them any less. Victims' loved ones must feel miserable about the situation. They may try to help, but sometimes they never stop until something drastic happens like death. It's sad because extreme events like that is what makes the bully realizes what he/she did. Lots of people are trying to stop it, but I don't think it'll ever stop. You can stop individuals, but cyber bullying will continue after.
I beleive that cyber bullying is becoming more prominent in a time when we use computers on a daily basis, and in general all of bullying. This is because bullying on a computer is alot easier to do than bullying someone in a public place. First of all reople beleive there are fewer consequences than physical bullying. Second, it is alot easier for the bully to get at the victim, because the it is harder to hide from the bully. Personally I beleive that the victim's loved ones wouldn'y end up knowing about it until it is too late, because it is easier to hide cyber bullying. Unfortunately I beleive that as we use computers more we will end up having more and more cyber bullying. I think it will only stop if people can control themselves to stop it or if people moderate all of the internet.

Permalink Reply by SameerM_TIGS on June 2, 2011 at 9:48pm I think cyber bullying involves people who are not so successful in life or people who themselves were bullied taking out their jealousy in a bullying way on people who are successful or are good at something. In my opinion I think cyber bullying is worse than getting bullied physically.
For example getting physically bullied is harder because you are in a face to face situation in front of other people opposed to cyber bullying where you are behind a computer screen and are alone. Cyber Bullying is also very bad as it is shared across the internet which makes it a lot harder to remove. Being bullied online also means that it is usually shared across a lot of people as opposed to physically bullying where bullying takes place in front of a few people and can be forgotten or solved. For example getting cyber bullied can occur 24/7 whereas getting physically bullied usually occurs only at school, work etc.
Cyber bullying can have very negative impacts on a person’s life especially on teenagers. People who are cyber bullied can go into severe depression and lose their self-respect and self-esteem. In severe cases victims of cyber bullying get bullied that severely and commit suicide.
I also believe Kevin Lee that in some situations that it is too late for the victims loved one to find out that their son/daughter is getting cyber bullied. But I think that the victim should straight away tell someone preferably their parents that they are getting bullied. Also Cyber bullying is easier to hide from parents as most parents are illiterate on computers. This small motto can be very useful to people that are getting cyber bullied ‘stop, block tell’. For example if you are getting cyber bullied tell the person who is bullying you to stop. Block means to block them from your contact list. Finally tell means to immediately tell an adult preferably your parents that you are getting bullied. One very important tip for teenagers especially is not to ignore cyber bullying as it can have a very bad effect on their mental health, so if a child does get cyber bullied it is best for them to tell an adult. Consequences to teenager’s that don’t seek advice from adults may end up severely depressed.
I think that cyber bullying is never going to stop as the internet is getting more available to individuals. Unlike the olden days when the internet wasn't around the victim would get bullied and come back home to where it’s safe. Nowadays victims can get bullied in school and there is no "Safe place" for them as they can get bullied over the internet and by SMS and phone calls.
I think that more action needs to be taken by parents and the Government and teach students the severe impacts cyber bullying can have on a person. It would be nice to see cyber bullying workshops taking place in schools.
Permalink Reply by KieranA_TIGS on June 2, 2011 at 9:59pm As we are becoming more active online; through sites and programs like Facebook, Second Life and World of Warcraft, bullying over the internet will become more common, even as common as in real life. But cyber bullying is much worse. Before the days of social networking, if you were bullied at school, when you were at home you were safe, free from judgement. But now if you are bullied over the internet the torment doesn't stop at the school yard; you aren't safe anywhere, even at home. This can be much worse, much quicker and much more traumatising to the victims. Driving many to suicide.
But sadly it wont stop, much like real bullying. People will always 'put down' others to feel better about themselves. Its a fact of life.
